Berry Pomeroy Castle is tucked away near the village of Berry Pomeroy, just a short drive from the town of Totnes and Paington in South Devon. This peaceful location is perfect for a day out with your dog, offering an alternetive to the coast.
The castle itself has a storied history, dating back to the late 15th century. Originally built by the Pomeroy family, it was later taken over by the Seymour family, who intended to transform it into the most magnificent house in Devon. However, their grand vision was never completed, and the castle was eventually abandoned in 1700, leaving behind a romantic ruin steeped in mystery and ghostly tales.
Exploring the castle grounds is a delight. The surrounding woodlands offer numerous trails in a natural setting, if your dog enjoys a bit of adventure, stroll down to the nearby brook that winds through the woods. It’s a perfect spot for a little paddle, especially on a warm day.

Berry Pomeroy Castle is easily accessible by car, with the location being well-signposted from Totnes. The drive itself is quite scenic, taking you through charming Devon countryside. You must be aware that the castle is at the end of an uneven, narrow single-track lane with passing places. There is a small car park available close to the castle.
For those using public transport, Totnes is the nearest train station. From there, you can take a taxi for a short ride to the castle. For the more energetic, you can take a countryside walk from Totnes, just under 3 miles away.
Facilities include toilets, a gift shop, an independent dog-friendly cafe offering light snacks, lunches, drinks, hot meals, and plenty of grassed areas for picnics.
