About
Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve is a stunning location that offers Scotland’s wild beauty. Located near Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway, this spectacular reserve is known for its dramatic 60-metre waterfall, rugged hills, and serene loch, all set against a landscape as timeless as it is awe-inspiring.
Dog Access and Rules
Grey Mare’s Tail is a dog-friendly location that welcomes well-behaved dogs. Dogs are allowed on the trails and throughout the reserve, but due to the steep terrain and close proximity to livestock and wildlife, they should be kept on a lead.
Things To See & Do
Between Moffat and Selkirk, Grey Mare’s Tail is one of Scotland’s most celebrated natural landmarks. It is named for its striking waterfall, which cascades down a steep, narrow gorge like the flowing “tail” of a mare. Managed by the National Trust for Scotland, Grey Mare’s Tail is a destination for scenic hikes. It is home to various rare species, from peregrine falcons to feral goats and plant species that thrive in its unique environment. While wildlife spotting can be tricky with a dog, it’s still a fantastic place to observe nature’s wonders. Just keep your pup close to avoid disturbing the wildlife!
The main trail to Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall is a must-do dog walk. You can take the short, easy 5-minute walk to the viewing point or the longer walk along the gorge to get closer. These will reward you with jaw-dropping views of the waterfall and valley below. Just be mindful of the rocky paths and steep edges, which may be challenging for smaller dogs or those with limited mobility.
For a more immersive adventure, follow the trail to Loch Skeen, a beautiful glacial loch nestled further into the reserve. Depending on how fast and how many stops to admire the views you have, this will take just over an hour.
Access and Facilities
Grey Mare’s Tail is located off the A708 road between Moffat and Selkirk, making it accessible by car from several major cities. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Edinburgh, and from Glasgow, it’s approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
While Grey Mare’s Tail offers spectacular views and rugged terrain, it is a wild nature reserve with no facilities other than a small car park.
