About
The Water of Leith offers one of Edinburgh’s most scenic and dog-friendly walking routes. Winding through the city’s heart, this 13-mile walkway takes you and your dog along tranquil riverside paths, lush greenery, and iconic landmarks.
The Water of Leith stretches from the outskirts of the Pentland Hills through Edinburgh’s scenic neighbourhoods, including Dean Village and Stockbridge, and ends at the Port of Leith. This river has long been a lifeblood of the city, once powering mills and factories during Edinburgh’s industrial past. Today, it’s a peaceful retreat where you can escape into nature right in the heart of the city.
You and your dog can enjoy a relaxing riverside walk through lush landscapes, past historic buildings, and through charming villages. There are many beautiful spots for your dog to explore, and you can even stop off at dog-friendly cafes or pubs along the way, such as those in Stockbridge or Leith. The walk also offers opportunities to spot wildlife like herons and otters.
The route is well signposted, and a walkway map is available from the Visitor Centre.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome along the Water of Leith Walkway as long as they are controlled and you clean up after them. Most areas allow dogs off-lead, but it’s essential to be mindful of cyclists, joggers, and wildlife. There are plenty of bins along the route to make cleaning up easy.
Access and Facilities
The Water of Leith is accessible from several points across the city, including the popular entry points at Dean Village, Stockbridge, and the Shore in Leith. Public transport connects these areas well, and parking can be found nearby, particularly in the Stockbridge and Leith areas. You can walk shorter segments of the path or explore the entire 13-mile route.
While there are no dedicated facilities along the walkway other than at the Visitor centre, nearby neighbourhoods like Stockbridge and Leith have cafes, pubs, and public toilets.
