About
Cliffe Pools offers open water, marshes, and the Thames estuary, yet it’s within easy reach of London and north Kent towns. The reserve is made up of saline lagoons, freshwater pools and grassland, created from old clay pits, and is now a magnet for waders and wildfowl through the year. For humans, it’s all about views, birdlife and a sense of space; for dogs, it’s a steady, sniff‑filled walk on mostly level tracks.
As this is an RSPB reserve, it’s managed for wildlife, and is not an off‑lead playground. It’s ideal if you enjoy nature, want a quieter alternative to busy country parks, and have a dog who’s happy on a lead or long line.
Dog-Friendly Policies
Dogs are permitted on public footpaths and Saxon Shore Way, provided they are kept on lead, under close control, and out of the pools.
Leads are essential to protect wildlife, grazing animals, and respect other visitors.
Things To See & Do
Cliffe Pools is all about wildlife, so walking with a dog here needs a bit of care. Long and short waymarked nature trails take you around the pools and to the main viewpoints.
Trails are level, but unsurfaced. No steps or stiles.
Access and Facilities
To reach the reserve by car, take Salt Lane from Cliffe village and continue until you see a signpost for RSPB Cliffe Pools, opposite an industrial site; the free RSPB car park is here and open daily. If you prefer, you can park in Cliffe village and walk down Salt Lane (about 1 mile) to the reserve entrance.
The closest bus stop is in Cliffe village, about 1 mile from the reserve entrance. From the bus stop, follow Salt Lane on foot toward the RSPB Cliffe Pools signpost to reach the car park and main entrance.
