About
The Castle is part of a rare Norman planned settlement, established in the 11th century by William de Warenne, a close associate of William the Conqueror. The site is a superb example of a motte-and-bailey castle, with impressive earthworks and the iconic Bailey Gate standing as a testament to its medieval importance. Its strategic design and preservation make it one of the best-preserved Norman sites in England.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on leads at the Castle.
Things To See & Do
You can explore the castle grounds together, taking in panoramic views from the earthworks. The Outer Bailey offers space for your dog to wander on a lead, while the Inner Bailey provides insights into Norman military architecture. Beyond the castle, the village of Castle Acre has beautiful paths for extended dog walks, including routes around Castle Acre Priory.
Access and Facilities
Castle Acre Castle is located near the village green.ย The castle has no facilities besides a few car parking spaces and some information boards, but it is very close to the centre of Castle Acre village, where there are options for a drink and something to eat. Toilets can be found at the priory.
