About
Hughenden Manor sits quietly in the Chiltern Hills, just outside High Wycombe, wrapped in rolling parkland and woodland. It was once the country home of Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, but today it feels more like a calm pause button on a busy week.
Hughenden was not just famous for being Disraeli’s house; it also played an important part in the Second World War, serving as a secret map-making base codenamed “Hillside” that worked alongside the nearby RAF bases.
When I walk here with a dog, it’s the sense of openness that stands out first. Paths that invite you to wander without rushing. It’s polished in places, yes, but still relaxed enough that muddy paws and sniff stops feel welcome.
You can visit the park for a walk, but as a National Trust member, I prefer the estate, which offers extensive grounds and gardens where dogs are welcome, making it a perfect day for history enthusiasts and their dogs.
Dog-Friendly Policies
Dogs on leads and under close control are allowed in Hughenden’s formal gardens, the orchard, the parkland, and the dog-friendly Stableyard Cafe, where you can eat in or take away.
Only assistance dogs are allowed inside the manor house.
Livestock may be present, particularly sheep, so keeping your dog under close control matters.
Things To See & Do
The estate features several marked trails through beautiful woodland areas. These trails are particularly appealing for dog walking, offering shaded paths and open fields. The trails vary in length and difficulty, so you can choose a route that suits your fitness level and interests.

Parkland Stroll Around the Manor
Approx. 1–1.5 miles | Easy | Mostly grass and gravel
While dogs are not allowed inside the manor house itself, which houses exhibitions on Disraeli’s life and a secret WWII map-making base, the exterior architecture and the building’s historical significance are still enjoyable from the outside.
Hughenden offers several gardens, including formal gardens, which you can admire with your dog from the designated pathways.
Woodland Edges & Longer Parkland Loops
Approx. 2–3 miles | Easy to moderate | Woodland paths and tracks
Head a little further out, and the feel shifts; the surrounding parkland provides ample space for more vigorous walks, and the paths feel more natural underfoot.
This route suits dogs who enjoy sniffing and exploring without constant distractions. It’s still well-marked and safe, but feels more like a proper countryside walk.
Access and Facilities
The property includes a car park (pay and display or National Trust free for members) located close to the main entrance. Toilets and refreshments are available at the cafe near the visitor centre.
