About
The Roman amphitheatre at Chester was the largest in Britain. It dates from the 1st century when the Roman fort of Deva Victrix was founded. The amphitheatre was used for entertainment and military training.
It is believed there have been two stone-built amphitheatres on the site. The first was a simple structure, while the second, later one, consisted of a 40-foot (12-meter) high stone ellipse 320 feet (98 m) along the major axis by 286 feet (87 m) along the minor axis and could easily seat 8,000 people.
You will not spend much time here, but if you are in the area, it is well worth a visit with information boards giving some historical details and a few benches and grass areas where you can sit and imagine what it was like in Roman times.
