About
Gwrych Castle is located in Abergele, North Wales, within 300 acres of private parkland and overlooking Colwyn Bay and the Irish Sea. Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh built this 19th-century Gothic revival castle as a tribute to his ancestors.
The castle became famous during the lockdown years of 2020/21 when the TV show “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” ran two series from the castle when they couldn’t travel to Australia. Most of the set was removed, but you can imagine the series and see some props left behind.
The castle grounds and outside areas are a good walk, and a few interior areas are open to the public, but as the main building is a ruin, there is currently no public access to most of the building.
Dog Access and Rules
Well-behaved dogs are allowed in interior and exterior areas – owners to always keep their dogs on leads.
Access and Facilities
The castle is easily accessed by car from the A547; take the exit for Tan y Gopa Road and immediately turn right onto the drive to Gwrych Castle, where you have a car park. The nearest train station is Abergele and Pensarn, and a bus stop is immediately outside the main entrance to the castle.
The castle has limited facilities due to the lack of running water. However, a pop-up shop, cafe with light snacks and hot and cold drinks are available, along with temporary toilets.
