About
Colwyn Bay, located on the North Wales coast, has beaches that mix wide, sandy stretches with shingle areas, making them perfect for play and relaxation. The promenade runs alongside the beach, offering a picturesque route for walking while enjoying views over the Irish Sea.
The area has a fascinating history. Once a Victorian seaside resort, it has one stretch of coast, and the individual beach names from west to east are Rhos-on-Sea Beach, Colwyn Bay Beach, Porth Eirias Beach, and Old Colwyn Beach.
The modern Porth Eirias complex has watersports facilities and a popular bistro. At the western end, Rhos-on-Sea Beach offers a more tranquil atmosphere and a small harbour. The central area has seasonal restrictions, while to the east, Old Colwyn Beach provides a quieter retreat, ideal for peaceful walks away from the crowds.
Dog Access and Rules
Colwyn Bay offers a mix of year-round dog-friendly spaces and some seasonal restrictions. While dogs are welcome on certain sections of the beach throughout the year, the central part of Colwyn Bay Beach has summer restrictions (from 1st May to 30th September). However, nearby Old Colwyn Beach and parts of Rhos-on-Sea Beach remain open to dogs all year, giving plenty of options for off-lead fun. Check local signage for up-to-date details of boundary points.
Access and Facilities
Colwyn Bay is easily accessible by car, located just off the A55, with multiple parking options near the beach, including at Porth Eirias and along the promenade. For those using public transport, Colwyn Bay train station is a short walk from the seafront, and local buses stop nearby.
Facilities in the area include public toilets, dog waste bins along the promenade, and a selection of dog-friendly cafes and pubs.
