About
Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall is one of the most dramatic hidden spots along the North Devon coast. Tucked into a steep valley where a small stream tumbles down to the sea, the waterfall drops nearly 50 metres through rocky cliffs before reaching a quiet, rugged beach.
The setting feels wonderfully wild. A short walk through fields and woodland leads you to the coast, where the waterfall flows directly onto the stones of Speke’s Mill Mouth Beach. With cliffs rising on both sides and the Atlantic stretching out in front, it’s the sort of place that comes across as remote and untouched.
Despite being relatively close to Hartland and the Cornish border near Bude, the valley remains peaceful, making it a rewarding stop for dog walkers who enjoy quiet coastal adventures.
Speke’s Mill Mouth is one of those places that feels like a secret discovery. If you enjoy quieter coastal walks and your dog loves exploring wild places, the waterfall and hidden beach make the short valley walk well worth it.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome year-round at Speke’s Mill Mouth, and there are no seasonal dog bans on the beach.
The area is usually quiet, so many owners allow their dogs off lead, particularly on the beach itself. However, because this is a natural and sometimes rugged environment, keeping dogs under close control is sensible.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Keep dogs on a lead near cliff edges and steep paths.
- Always pick up after your dog and take waste away if bins are not available.
- Prevent dogs from disturbing wildlife along the cliffs and stream.
The rocky terrain and uneven ground mean it’s also wise to keep an eye on paws around slippery stones and rock pools.
Things To See & Do
A visit to Speke’s Mill Mouth is all about the walk, the waterfall, and the wild coastal scenery. If you’re visiting Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall with your dog, there are two practical parking options that give you slightly different walking experiences. Both are scenic, but one is a slightly harder coastal path while the other is the easier valley route.
Walk Option 1: From Hartland Quay (Coastal Walk)
Parking at Hartland Quay turns the visit into a proper coastal walk. From the car park, you join the South West Coast Path and follow the clifftop route south.
The walk is spectacular but more demanding than the valley route. Expect rugged coastal scenery, steep ups and downs, and Atlantic views almost the entire way. After around 2–2.5 miles (3–4 km), you’ll reach the point where the path drops down towards Speke’s Mill Mouth.
From there, a smaller path leads into the valley and down to the waterfall and rocky beach.
Good to know
- Approx 4–5 mile return walk
- Stunning clifftop scenery the whole way
- Some steep sections and uneven ground
- Great option if your dog enjoys a longer adventure
This route feels like a real exploration of the North Devon coast and is especially rewarding on clear days when the sea views stretch for miles.
Walk Option 2: From Docton Mill Gardens (Easier Valley Walk)
The easiest and most popular access is from Docton Mill Gardens.
From the Docton Mill, a public footpath leads down the valley towards the sea. The walk follows a peaceful stream through woodland and fields before reaching the coast at Speke’s Mill Mouth.
It usually takes around 20–30 minutes each way, making it a relaxed outing for most walkers and dogs.
At the end of the path, you’ll reach the rocky beach where the waterfall cascades down the cliff before meeting the sea.
Good to know
- Around a 1.5-mile return walk
- Mostly downhill to the beach, uphill on the return
- Quieter valley scenery with woodland and stream views
- Ideal if you want to combine the walk with tea and cake afterwards at the tea room
Many visitors like to finish the walk with a stop at the Docton Mill Tea Room, especially if muddy paws and tired legs are involved.
Which Route is Best?
- Hartland Quay → best for a long scenic coastal hike
- Docton Mill → best for a shorter, easier walk to the waterfall
Both routes eventually lead you to the same reward — the hidden cove and dramatic cascade of Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall, where the stream tumbles straight onto the beach below the cliffs.
Access and Facilities
Speke’s Mill Mouth is intentionally simple and unspoilt, and you have no facilities once you set off walking. Two options for parking at either Hartland Quay or Docton Mill (see above for walk options).
