Dog Access and Rules
Charmouth Beach welcomes dogs, but there are some seasonal restrictions to keep in mind. From 1st May to 30th September, dogs are only allowed on the beach’s western end, past the promenade, while the central and eastern sections are restricted during this period. For clarity, the central section runs west from the River Char to the end of the promenade. Outside of the summer season, however, the entire beach is open for dogs to enjoy, giving you plenty of room to roam. As with any beach visit, it’s important to keep your dog under control and ensure you clean up after them to help keep the area clean and welcoming for other visitors.

The renowned fossil hunter Mary Anning made significant discoveries nearby, adding to the area’s rich geological history. Today, Charmouth Beach remains a popular destination for fossil hunters and dog owners looking to enjoy its natural beauty.
There’s plenty to keep you and your dog entertained at Charmouth Beach. The beach is divided into two, split by the River Char. The beach’s western end, where dogs are welcome year-round, is a lovely spot for a leisurely walk along the pebbles and sand. For a more adventurous outing, take your dog along the South West Coast Path, which runs through Charmouth, offering stunning cliff-top views of the coastline.

This coast stretch suffers from a lot of erosion, so it is not wise to go near the fallen cliffs to look for fossils, stay away from cliff edges if walking along the top of the cliffs on the South West Coast Path, and never sit at the base of the cliffs.
Access and Facilities
Charmouth Beach is easily accessible whether you arrive by car or public transport. The beach is well-signposted from the main A35 road, and a large car park is right by the beach, making it easy to unload your gear. Buses run regularly between Lyme Regis, Charmouth, and Bridport if you’re travelling by public transport. The bus stop is just a short walk from the beach, making it a convenient option for those not driving.
Charmouth Beach has several facilities to make your visit more comfortable. There are toilets near the car park, including accessible options. Dog waste bins are available, so you can easily keep the beach clean for everyone. For refreshments, there’s a cafe near the Heritage Coast Centre where you can grab a drink or snack, and some seating areas are dog-friendly, so you can sit outside with your dog while enjoying the sea views.
The Heritage Coast Centre is an excellent stop for those interested in learning more about the local geology and fossils. While dogs aren’t allowed inside the centre, you can visit while someone stays with your dog outside. Charmouth village also has several dog-friendly pubs and cafes, just a short walk from the beach.
