Golden Cap and surrounding areas welcome dogs, making it a fantastic choice for a day out with your furry companion. Dogs are allowed on the popular paths leading to the summit. However, keeping your dog on a lead when walking through areas with livestock or near cliff edges is essential. Dogs are also welcome in the surrounding beaches, like Charmouth and Seatown, though both have seasonal restrictions.

Golden Cap is located between the coastal villages of Seatown and Charmouth, proudly on the Jurassic Coast. At 191 metres high, it offers panoramic coastline views, stretching to Lyme Regis in the west and beyond Bridport in the east. The cliff’s name comes from the golden-coloured sandstone at the summit, which glows in the sunlight.
There are plenty of activities for you and your dog to enjoy around Golden Cap. Here are some of the best things to do:
Hike to the summit: The main attraction is the walk to the top of Golden Cap. The climb is moderately challenging, but your dog will love stretching their legs along the grassy paths. Once at the top, the views are worth it – you and your dog can take a break and admire the sweeping coastal vistas.
Coastal walks: If you and your dog enjoy longer hikes, you can explore the South West Coast Path that passes through Golden Cap. This trail offers a variety of routes, including scenic clifftop walks and peaceful stretches through meadows and woodland.
Beach time at Seatown: After your walk, head down to Seatown Beach, where your dog can enjoy a splash in the sea and a run along the pebbles. Seatown is a lovely, quieter beach, perfect for unwinding after an active day.

Golden Cap is easy to reach by car and is well-signposted from nearby villages. Several walking starting points include Langdon Hill, Stonebarrow Hill and Seatown car parks. If you’re visiting via public transport, buses run from Bridport and Lyme Regis to Charmouth, making it accessible even if you don’t drive. From there, you can follow marked trails up to Golden Cap, with routes ranging from 1.5 to 4 miles, depending on your chosen path.
While Golden Cap itself is all about enjoying nature, the nearest facilities are available in nearby Seatown and Charmouth.
After a long walk, you and your dog can relax at one of the local pubs, such as The Anchor Inn in Seatown. Many of the pubs in the area are dog-friendly, with water bowls and outdoor seating areas where you and your dog can enjoy a post-hike treat.
