About
Killantringan Bay offers one of the most visually striking dog walks in the area, thanks to the distinctive lighthouse perched on the headland above.
This beach is one of the largest on this stretch of coast and reaches over 200m in width in places. Two streams cross the beach. The bay at low tide combines with Knock Bay, giving you over 1km of sheltered beach, shingle and rocks, while the surrounding headland opens into coastal paths with expansive views over the Irish Sea. For dogs that enjoy variety, this is a particularly rewarding spot.
The lighthouse gives the walk a real sense of purpose and adventure, and the headland routes provide excellent exercise for higher-energy dogs.
If you want a scenic, feature-rich coastal walk with lighthouse views and good exercise potential for your dog, Killantringan Bay is an excellent choice.
Dog Access and Rules
Killantringan Bay is widely used by local dog walkers and is generally considered dog-friendly.
The beach allows dogs year-round, but because the headland includes cliff edges and more exposed terrain, good recall and reliable lead control are especially important, especially in windy conditions or during busy times.
The coastal paths can be wet and muddy depending on recent weather, so be prepared for messier paws than a pure beach-only walk.
Things To See & Do
This needs to be treated as a coastal dog walk, not a beach trip. The main appeal is combining bay exploration with a headland loop for the views.
You will start at the lighthouse on the headland, and, at mid to low tide, take a drop down for a beach stroll in the bay itself, letting your dog enjoy sand, shingle and rock exploration.
The headland walk offers wonderful sea views and a rewarding destination. On clear days, the views make it feel like a proper adventure outing.
If you fancy a longer coastal walk, then you can park in Portpatrick to the south and then follow the coast path northwards to make a day of it.
Access and Facilities
Killantringan Bay requires a bit more planning than some easier beach spots, but the effort pays off.
Travelling by car, you will have to take a narrow lane off the B738 signposted Killantringan Lighthouse. Parking is available near the lighthouse to the south of the bay, but facilities are nonexistent, so bring plenty of water, snacks, and dog supplies. Alternatively, if you like walking, park at Portpatrick, 3 miles to the south and take the coastal footpath.
Weather can change quickly on the headland, and winds can be strong, so check conditions and dress accordingly. A towel for sandy or muddy paws is essential.
