About
Dovestone Reservoir is a fantastic place to visit with your dog! Located on the outskirts of Manchester and just inside the Peak District National Park, it offers beautiful scenic walks perfect for an escape in the countryside.
Things To See & Do
Dovestone Reservoir is located near Oldham on the northwestern edge of the Peak District National Park. It is one of a series of reservoirs that provide water to the Greater Manchester area.
The most popular walk is the Dovestone Reservoir circular walk, which is around 4km (2.5 miles) and follows a well-maintained path around the reservoir. It’s relatively flat and suitable for all fitness levels. Your dog can explore, sniff around, and enjoy the wide-open spaces, though it’s recommended to keep them on a lead around wildlife and livestock.
For more adventurous hikers, this can be the starting point for longer walks leading up towards Saddleworth Moor or Chew Reservoir, which offer more challenging terrain and even better views.
Access and Facilities
Dovestone Reservoir is easily accessible by car from nearby cities like Manchester and Oldham. It’s about a 30 to 40-minute drive from Manchester, and a car park is close to the reservoir’s main entrance. For public transport users, you can catch a train to Greenfield Station, just over a mile away or take a bus that stops near the reservoir.
One warning: the small car park can fill up quickly on hot summer days, so you must get here early or consider public transport.
You have no facilities other than public toilets and the car park.
