About
Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary sits within the wider forest rather than feeling fenced off, so the experience is more about walking through a habitat with well-marked tracks, tall trees, and a sense of space. This all means that with a dog lead, walking and awareness are essential.
Dog Access and Rules
Because deer roam freely and often appear without warning, lead walking isn’t optional here.
Things To See & Do
Bolderwood is built around smooth, often gravelled tracks that make walking easy, though there are some slopes depending on the route taken. You don’t need to commit to a set route, you can wander out, see how things feel, and turn back whenever it suits you.
Although you can walk anywhere, there are three waymarked routes from the car park.
- Platform Trail is the best place to see deer – 0.75 km (0.5 miles), with a walking time of approximately 15 minutes.
- Jubilee Trail is a circular stroll through ancient woods and deer-watching spots – 1.6 km (1 mile) with a walking time of approximately 25 minutes.
- Radnor Trail is a longer walk through ancient and modern woodland – 3.2 km (2 miles), with a walking time of approximately 50 minutes.
The viewing platform is the focal point of Bolderwood. Deer are most often seen early in the morning or later in the day, and dogs should be kept close and settled around the platform area. Even if you don’t see any deer, the setting itself is worth the walk, and the forest atmosphere does most of the work.
