Dog Access and Rules
Keep your dog on a lead, especially near the viewpoints and on busy paths. Ensure your dog is well-behaved around other visitors.
Things To See & Do
Lyle Hill provides panoramic views over the Firth of Clyde, taking in the town of Greenock, the surrounding countryside, and even as far as the Argyll mountains. The hill’s highest point is Craigs Top at 426 feet (130 m) above sea level. The stunning vista is one of the main attractions, offering a perfect backdrop for memorable photos with your dog.
The area around Lyle Hill is perfect for walking, with several paths and trails to explore:
- Hilltop Path: Take a leisurely stroll along the hilltop path. The viewpoint is marked by a beacon constructed to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 and lit on special occasions. On the other side of the road, steps and a rough path lead up to Craigs Top, the hill’s highest point. The terrain is relatively easy, making it suitable for dogs of all ages and sizes.
- Surrounding Countryside: Explore the nearby countryside trails, which offer a mix of grassy paths and woodland walks. These routes provide a variety of scents and sights for your dog to enjoy.
While at Lyle Hill, you can also appreciate its historical significance:
- Free French Memorial: At the top of the hill, you’ll find the Free French Memorial commemorating the Free French Naval Forces who fought in World War II. This distinctive landmark was built in the shape of the Cross of Lorraine, the emblem of the Free French, combined with an anchor, adds a touch of historical interest to your visit.
Access and Facilities
There are no facilities, so you will need to take everything with you. We have assumed in this post that you will walk up the hill, but you can park by the memorial on Lyle Road and just explore the top and the views.
