About
Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham offer a long, unspoilt stretch of coastline, forming part of the beautiful Holkham National Nature Reserve.
If your dog could design the ideal day out, it would mirror Wells and Holkham: endless sand, gentle surf, dunes to explore, and cool pinewoods for respite from the sun. The two beaches blend seamlessly, allowing you to turn a casual stroll into an adventure, travelling from Wells’ candy-coloured beach huts to Holkham.
At low tide, the sands offer adventurous dogs vast off-lead areas to roam while you breathe in sea air and enjoy classic North Norfolk vistas. When the tide returns, there’s still plenty of space along the dunes or within the pines for a sheltered walk.
Dog-Friendly Policies
Understanding where the dog policies change is key to a smooth visit, so you can plan ahead.
Wells‑next‑the‑Sea Beach
- Dogs are welcome on most of Wells Beach all year.
- A dog-free zone covers the first 200 yards of beach from the main entrance, while the pinewoods entrances have no restrictions. The section where dogs are not allowed is signposted.
- During the summer, some areas require dogs to be kept on leads to protect nesting and vulnerable birds. Please look for seasonal signs and maps at access points.
For the most dog‑friendly experience, use the boardwalk/paths that bring you out onto the main dog area of the beach, where off‑lead fun is usually allowed for well‑behaved dogs.
Holkham Beach
- Dogs are welcome year‑round on Holkham Beach.
- Between 1st April and 31st August, some parts of the beach and dunes become on‑lead only to protect shore‑nesting birds. These areas are clearly mapped, roped, or signed.
- Through the pinewoods from Lady Anne’s Drive, keep dogs on a lead to protect wildlife and respect other visitors.
In reality, you’ll still find ample space to let your dog off the lead beyond sensitive zones, provided recall is reliable.
Things To See & Do
Classic dog walks worth exploring:
Wells Beach out‑and‑back
- Start at the Wells Beach car park and Beach Cafe.
- Take the dog‑friendly boardwalk or woodland path to the main dog section of the beach.
- Turn right or left along the sand and simply walk as far as you and your dog feel like before looping back.
Perfect for: Short breaks, sunset strolls, or a quick energy-burn before an easy trip back to treats and towels at the car.
Wells to Holkham big beach day
- Start at Wells Beach and head west along the sand towards Holkham.
- Enjoy the wide, firm sand at low tide – excellent for long strides and fast zoomies.
- When you reach Holkham, cut inland on signed paths through the dunes and pinewoods. Stop at The Lookout for refreshments.
- Return either the same way along the beach or via the pinewood footpaths that run behind the dunes.
Perfect for: A half- or full-day outing, with a cafe stop midway and plenty of variety for curious paws.
Holkham loop from Lady Anne’s Drive
- Park at Lady Anne’s Drive for Holkham.
- Walk through the pinewoods on the boardwalks to reach the beach.
- Enjoy a loop along the sand, watching for seasonal wildlife zones, then return by taking a different pinewood path.
Perfect for: Dogs who love both woodland and the beach, and owners who want a calmer start than busy Wells.
