About
Rievaulx Abbey is a wonderfully dog‑friendly English Heritage site in a peaceful valley near Helmsley, North Yorkshire. This makes an ideal visit with your dog, as they are allowed throughout the ruins and museum as long as they are kept on a lead, and there are easy walking options straight from the car park.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs on leads are welcome in the ruins and tearoom, but not at the tearoom counter. Keep your dog on a short lead throughout to protect the site, other visitors and local wildlife; there are often sheep or game birds close by.
Things To See & Do
You can easily spend 45–90 minutes just wandering around the abbey itself, reading the information boards and taking in the cloister, church and monastic buildings. For a more leg-stretching walk, there are waymarked walks from the site using quiet lanes, grassland, and woodland paths, around 2.5 miles (4 km) is typical, with some mud and gentle gradients, but nothing too strenuous.
If you want a full day, you could visit Helmsley Castle and take a pleasant walk to the abbey and back, approximately 2.5 miles (4km) each way. Both locations allow dogs on leads.
Access and Facilities
The visitor centre has a tearoom serving light meals, cakes and hot drinks, with views back over the abbey. The toilets and the shop are adjacent to the entrance, near the car park.
