About
Cheddar Gorge is a natural limestone gorge, and at almost 122m (400ft) deep and 4.8km (3 miles) long, it is England’s largest gorge.
There’s no shortage of things to do at Cheddar Gorge with your dog. The circular clifftop walk is about 6km (4 miles) long and is a must-do for the more energetic dogs. You can expect this to take you two and a half hours (ish), depending on how many stops and photo opportunities you take. It’s a bit of a climb in places, but the views at the top are well worth the effort. Just make sure to bring sturdy footwear and some water for your dog.
For more adventure, you can walk up to Jacob’s Ladder, which is a steep staircase cut into the cliff, then climb the Lookout Tower at the top for some of the best views.
The caves at Cheddar Gorge are a fascinating underground world of stalactites, stalagmites, and history. However, you do need to be sure your dog will be comfortable in dark, damp, and unusual spaces.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome in all attractions, including shops and outside at the cafe. The area is mixed terrain, some dogs may struggle with the longer hilly paths, while others may find entering the caves uncomfortable.
Access and Facilities
Cheddar Gorge is around 30 minutes from Wells (14km) and Weston-super-Mare (18km), and 45 minutes from Bristol (29km). It’s easiest to reach by car, and there are several car parks around the village and near the gorge itself. Most are pay-and-display, with the main car park conveniently located at the foot of the gorge.
