About
Dovedale, nestled in the heart of the Peak District, is a breathtaking limestone valley renowned for its dramatic landscapes, river walks, and famous stepping stones. It’s a fantastic choice for a day out with your dog, offering scenic trails, plenty of fresh air, and many opportunities for a good splash in the River Dove.
The stepping stones, built in the 19th century, are a highlight and make for a fun crossing point, though some dogs may prefer to paddle through the river instead!
Beyond the stepping stones, the valley leads to stunning landmarks such as Thorpe Cloud, a steep hill that offers panoramic views, and Reynard’s Cave, a striking rock formation with a natural arch.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome at Dovedale all year round. There are no specific restrictions, but keeping dogs on leads in busier areas is important, particularly near the stepping stones and livestock. Remember to bring dog waste bags, as bins can be limited in some parts of the valley.
Things To See & Do
There’s no shortage of things to do with your dog in Dovedale. Start your walk at the Dovedale Car Park near Thorpe and follow the riverside path through the valley. This route is relatively easy and has spots for your dog to dip into the river.
Feeling adventurous? Climb Thorpe Cloud for a bit of a challenge and stunning views over the surrounding countryside. It’s a steep ascent, but the reward at the top is well worth it. Alternatively, explore the quieter trails beyond the main valley for a more peaceful experience.
Milldale, a charming hamlet further along the trail, is a great spot to stop for a break. There’s a lovely stone bridge and shady areas by the river where you and your dog can relax. Bring a picnic or visit the nearby cafe.
