About
Penarth Beach lies just south of Cardiff, with a mix of pebbles and sand at low tide, and a long promenade along the seafront. Penarth became a seaside resort in the late 1800s, when the railway brought in day-trippers.
It has a gentle, seaside-town charm: a historic pier (dogs not allowed on the boards), gardens, sea views stretching across the Bristol Channel, and cliffs edging part of the coast.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are allowed all year round on Penarth Beach south of the yacht club and on the section north of the Pier up to the Cardiff Bay barrage.
Penarth Beach has seasonal restrictions in the central area. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are banned south of the pier to the Yacht Club and Lifeboat station.
Things To See & Do
If you walk from the pier along the promenade, you’ll get sea views towards the islands, like Flat Holm and over the Bristol Channel. If you continue to head south toward the cliffs, you will have the dog-friendly beach area all year and move away from the peak season crowds. By the cliffs, you have opportunities for fossil-hunting and rock pool exploration.
At low tide, you can avoid the pebbles and stones as there’s some sand nearer the sea, which is suitable for a gentle splash.
Access and Facilities
Parking is along the esplanade and on nearby roads/cliff-top streets, though the best option for dog owners is the Cliff Parade car park, which is beside a large park and the year-round dog-friendly stretch.
If you travel by train, Penarth railway station is about 500 metres from the pier, a short walk through town and then across gardens to the seafront.
There are cafes, shops, toilets and pubs close to the promenade and pier, and if you want to wander into the town centre, you have small independent shops and spots to grab a bite.
