About
Inveraray Jail is a former 19th‑century courthouse and prison complex that has been turned into a “living” museum. You and your dog move through the actual courtroom and prison blocks, meeting costumed characters, life‑size figures and immersive displays that show how men, women and children, some as young as seven, were tried and locked up here.
Dog Access and Rules
Inveraray Jail is dog-friendly, making it a stand‑out “rainy day” option where you don’t need to leave your dog in the car while you explore, though dogs are not allowed in the Escape Room.
All dogs receive free entry. A water bowl is at the museum entrance, and there is a grassed area outside in the exercise yard.
Things To See & Do
You start in the grand courtroom, where audio and costumed characters recreate trials from the 1800s, bringing real historic cases to life. From there, you and your dog can wander the old and new prison blocks, comparing the grim early cells of the 1820 jail with the “improved” Victorian wing built in 1849.
Along the way, you can:
- Step into individual cells and read stories of the prisoners who were held there.
- Try out wooden beds or hammocks to get a feel for how inmates slept.
- See punishments such as the whipping table or crank wheel (more for the humans than the hounds).
- Explore the airing yards where prisoners once took their limited outdoor exercise – now a useful little leg‑stretch area for your pup too.
The whole experience is designed to be self‑guided, so you can move at your own pace and duck outside if your dog needs a breather.
Access and Facilities
The Jail is located in Inveraray. You’ll find some limited free parking directly in front of the Jail. There’s a large town car park located just across the Main Street.
