Hawridge and Cholesbury Commons comprise 42 hectares of privately owned common land, about 25% of which is grass and bracken, with woods forming the remainder. These expansive natural spaces are ideal for dog walking, exploring diverse habitats, and enjoying the tranquillity of the countryside.
The Commons are bounded on the south side by the villages of Hawridge and Cholesbury, which are in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and are equal distance from Chesham, Berkhamsted, Tring and Wendover.
Dog Access and Rules
Hawridge and Cholesbury Commons is very welcoming to dogs. The open spaces are perfect for dogs to run and play, but it is important to keep them under control, especially during the bird nesting season or near livestock.
Certain areas might require dogs to be on a lead, particularly if livestock are grazing nearby. Always be on the lookout for and adhere to local signage regarding dog control.
Things To See & Do
The commons cover a significant area, providing plenty of space for long walks. Numerous paths and trails crisscross the commons, suitable for all levels of walkers. These trails offer varied scenery, from dense woodlands to open fields, and are well-maintained, making them accessible throughout the year.
The area is rich in history, with archaeological sites like an Iron Age hillfort and a Windmill although now in private ownership. There’s also a strong sense of community stewardship, with local groups often involved in conservation and educational activities.

The area is large and there are many parking points along the roads. If you want a pint or something to eat then the dog-friendly Full Moon nearby.
