About
Visiting Weston Turville Reservoir with your dog is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a peaceful and scenic outdoor excursion. Tucked between Weston Turville, Aston Clinton and Wendover, the reservoir sits at the edge of the Chilterns and offers a quiet break from the busier spots nearby. If you’ve ever walked Coombe Hill or the canal paths, this is a gentler place, somewhere you can stretch your legs without tackling steep climbs or long distances.
The reservoir is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), highlighting its importance for local biodiversity, particularly birdlife.
Dog-Friendly Policies
Dogs are welcome at Weston Turville Reservoir, but they must always be on a lead. This is particularly important because of the wildlife and the site’s status as a protected area.
The reservoir is strictly off-limits for swimming or paddling, so bring fresh water and take regular breaks if it’s hot.
Things To See & Do
The reservoir features a well-maintained footpath, 2km (1.2 miles), that encircles it, providing an easy and accessible route for walkers of all abilities. The path is relatively flat, making it suitable for families with strollers and individuals with limited mobility, although a very short stretch is beside a road. If you want a longer walk, you can walk out the back of the reservoir through the woods, join the Wendover Arm Canal, and either head into Wendover or take a more rural route towards Halton.

As an SSSI, the reservoir is home to various bird species, especially waterfowl. It’s a fantastic spot for birdwatchers, so bring your binoculars or camera. Depending on the season, you might see a diverse range of birds, from ducks, swans and geese to more uncommon species.
Although unsuitable for a dog visit, fishing is popular at Weston Turville Reservoir. You must obtain the appropriate permits, as local angling clubs manage the reservoir.
As well as a nature reserve, the reservoir hosts a sailing club, which adds to the relaxing atmosphere on fine days.
If you fancy a longer adventure, the Wendover Woods trail network is only ten minutes by car away and makes a great follow-on trip.
Access and Facilities
All you have is car parking, although it can get very busy on a nice day. You have no toilets or places to eat.
After your walk, you’ve got some lovely places in Wedton Turville to unwind:
- The Chequers Inn, welcomes dogs outside and is great for a relaxed drink.
- The Five Bells, another cosy option with indoor and outdoor seating options.
- The Chandos Arms, another good option, welcomes dogs inside and outside.
- If you want a cafe, the Village Retreat, hidden beside the village hall, has indoor and outdoor seating.
Wendover is a short drive with cafes, bakeries and pubs like The Shoulder of Mutton.

Weekday walk, late afternoon autumn light. One of my favourite locations in the Wendover area.
