Llansteffan Castle sits above the Tywi Estuary, watching over the village and the long sweep of Llansteffan Beach.ย There’s loads of space, and the walk up isn’t too challenging either, so it’s a nice choice to combine with exploring the village and beach.
Dogs on leads are welcome around the castle grounds, and the area is unfenced and open so that you can explore freely.
As you approach the top, the castle reveals itself bit by bit. The views are excellent, from the outer walls you can see Llansteffan Beach and the estuary, giving you a sense of why this was a strategic location for a castle.
This is a great dog walk, start in the village, head up to the castle, then wander down to the beach for a calmer stroll. It's a simple route that feels like three trips in one: the village, history, and coast.
Llansteffan Castle is a short walk from the village. You can park in the village car parks near the beach and follow the signed footpath up the hill. The path is steep in parts but well-trodden, and most dogs manage it without any fuss. The ground can get muddy after rain, so sensible shoes help.
There aren't facilities at the castle itself, just open space and the ruins. Everything you need is back down in the village, including toilets and places where you can grab a drink or something to eat. It makes sense to combine the castle with a village wander, so you've got everything to hand.
The castle can be used for private events and weddings, and so access may be restricted.
