About
Carlyon Bay sits just outside St Austell on Cornwall’s south coast. The bay is made up of three neighbouring beaches, from west to east: Crinnis Beach, Shorthorn Beach, and Polgaver Beach, which together form a long, sweeping stretch of sand and shingle beneath low cliffs.
At low tide, the three beaches begin to connect, creating a broad shoreline that’s ideal for relaxed wandering with a dog. It’s the mix of sand, pebbles and sea air that gives it a slightly wild feel despite being close to town.
You can also take a short walk along the coast path by the golf course to Spit Beach.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome at Carlyon Bay’s beaches all year.
The location works well for a simple dog beach walk, especially outside the busiest periods
Things To See & Do
The biggest draw here is simply walking the shoreline with your dog. At low tide, the beaches link together, allowing for a long wander between Crinnis, Shorthorn and Polgaver.
The mix of sand and shingle means confident dogs can stretch their legs, explore rockier edges, and paddle along the waterline.
While parts of the bay can become lively near the main access points, walking further along the shore often reveals quieter corners. Early mornings and evenings are especially peaceful.
Above the beaches runs the South West Coast Path, offering scenic walks with sweeping views across the bay. The path connects with Charlestown, known for its historic harbour and maritime character.
Access and Facilities
Carlyon Bay offers basic but convenient access for visitors.
Parking is available near Crinnis Beach, which is the main access point. From here, it’s easy to walk along the bay toward the quieter beaches.
As part of the Carlyon Beach resort, you do have places to eat and drink at the beach.
