About
Tucked away on the edge of St Austell Bay, Spit Beach is a small, lesser-known stretch of shoreline near St Austell. It sits just beyond the harbour village of Charlestown, and feels far quieter, more like a locals’ beach rather than a tourist beach.
As a natural beach, you get a nice blend of sand, pebbles, and sea-worn rocks, with sweeping bay views and the occasional sailing boat bound for Charlestown’s historic harbour.
Because it’s slightly tucked away and less signposted than nearby beaches, Spit Beach feels like a hidden gem. For dog owners, that can be part of the appeal, a tranquil spot to stroll and savour the sea air.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome at Spit Beach throughout the year with no summer restrictions.
The beach attracts walkers rather than beach day visitors, so you can enjoy relaxed off-lead time when it’s quiet.
Things To See & Do
Spit Beach is perfect for a gentle walk rather than a full day at the beach. Its shoreline offers easy walking with your dog, calm waves, and nice views across St Austell Bay.
While not a classic sandy beach, the rocky edges and mixed shoreline can be fun for curious dogs. Dogs who enjoy sniffing along the tide line will find plenty to explore among the mix of sand, pebbles and seaweed.
The surrounding coastline links into sections of the South West Coast Path, offering longer walks.
Just along the coast is Charlestown, one of the area’s most distinctive spots. After your Spit Beach walk, wander into the historic harbour, the tall ships, historic quays and small cafes make it a lovely place to extend the outing.
Access and Facilities
Spit Beach is a simple and undeveloped stretch of coast, so there are no toilets, shops, or lifeguards directly on the beach.
You have a small car park on Par Moor Road just before the railway bridge. From the back of the car park, follow the path under the railway that leads down to the beach.
An alternative is to include a longer walk and use parking areas around Charlestown and Carlyon Bay.
Practical items to keep in mind:
- You have no facilities on the beach.
- Bring treats, water and waste bags.
- Surfaces can be a mix of sand, pebbles and rocks.
- Tide levels affect the amount of beach that is accessible.
If you’re planning a longer outing, nearby Charlestown provides cafes, pubs and places to sit with a drink after your walk.
