Charlestown Harbour is one of the most distinctive and historic places to visit along the south Cornwall coast. Just a few minutes from St Austell, this beautifully preserved Georgian harbour is famous for its tall ships, stone harbour walls and timeless atmosphere.
Originally built in the late 18th century to export china clay from Cornwall, the harbour still feels as though a step back in time. The tall sailing ships and historic buildings have made it a well-known filming location for productions such as Poldark.
Charlestown features a picturesque harbour with small pebble beaches on either side of the harbour walls; however, dogs are not allowed on Charlestown Beach at any time of year.
Dog Access and Rules
The harbour area itself is dog-friendly, but as it’s a working harbour and a popular tourist spot, it’s best to keep dogs under control and on a lead in busy areas, cafes and around the harbour walls.
Unfortunately, the two small pebble beaches beside the harbour don’t allow dogs.
Things To See & Do
A wander around Charlestown Harbour is the highlight of any visit. Dogs are welcome to join you as you stroll along the quayside, watch the boats and take in the views across St Austell Bay.
Charlestown is connected to the stunning South West Coast Path, offering beautiful cliff-top walks along the south coast of Cornwall. You can head east toward quiet coves or west toward sandy bays near St Austell.
The village is known for its excellent cafes and pubs overlooking the harbour.
