About
Set on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula, Kennack Sands is one of the largest and most accessible beaches in this part of Cornwall โ and a real favourite for dog walks.
Comprising two main sections, Kennack Sands East and West, the beach opens out into a wide stretch of sand at low tide, with rocky outcrops and rock pools adding a bit of character along the edges. It’s backed by grassy dunes and low cliffs, giving it a more open, relaxed feel compared to some of the peninsula’s remote coves.
Close to Coverack, Kennack offers that balance that’s sometimes hard to find โ easy access, space to roam, and still enough natural beauty to feel like a proper Cornish escape.
Dog Access and Rules
Kennack Sands is dog-friendly all year round, but there are seasonal restrictions on parts of the beach:
- Kennack Sands East: Dog-friendly year-round.
- Kennack Sands West: No dogs allowed during peak summer months, JulyโAugust, 10 amโ6 pm.
You always have access to some beach, but outside peak summer hours, it’s a fantastic place for a proper run on the sand.
Things To See & Do
At low tide, Kennack Sands really opens up. You’ll find long stretches of sand for running and playing, and plenty of space even on busier days.
The beach is split into Kennack Sands West and Kennack Sands East, and is divided by a rocky outcrop called the Caerverracks. These rocky areas between the two sections of the beach are perfect for a bit of exploring, although be careful of the summer restrictions.
At low tide, you also have rock pools to explore, great for curious dogs (and equally curious humans).
Kennack Sands links directly into the South West Coast Path, making it a great starting point for longer walks. From here, you can head toward quieter coves like Lankidden Cove and Downas Cove to the east.
Unlike some of Cornwallโs more enclosed beaches and coves, Kennack feels open even with some summer restrictions. Itโs ideal if your dog loves a proper beach run with few obstacles.
Access and Facilities
Kennack Sands is one of the more practical beaches on the Lizard. Facilities include a car park close to the beach, a cafe, toilets and seasonal lifeguards.
A couple of tips:
- Visit at low to mid tide for the best experience and maximum space.
- Head to the East side during the summer for fewer restrictions
