About
Mousehole is one of the most charming places on Cornwall’s south coast. Just a few miles from Penzance, the village is known for its narrow lanes, granite cottages and picturesque harbour that appears almost unchanged for centuries.
At low tide, small sandy areas appear inside the harbour walls, while rocky and pebble beaches stretch just outside the harbour toward the coastline. The harbour itself is a real suntrap, making it a popular spot for families and swimmers when the tide is out.
Mousehole is much more than a beach stop, though. The village is perfect for a gentle wander with your dog, with tiny streets, art galleries, seafood restaurants and sweeping sea views around every corner.
Just outside the harbour, you’ll also find the Mousehole Rock Pool, a historic tidal swimming pool built to create a safe place for locals to swim and now one of the most distinctive spots along this coastline.
Dog Access and Rules
Mousehole is partly dog-friendly, but there are important restrictions to be aware of before visiting.
The main harbour beach does not allow dogs at any time of year, as the harbour is a busy working port and popular swimming spot.
The small beaches outside the harbour, seasonal restrictions apply:
- Dogs are not permitted between 1 July and 31 August from 10am–6pm.
- Dogs are allowed outside these times and during the rest of the year.
Dogs are welcome to walk around the harbour quays and village streets, although they should be kept on a lead around fishing areas and busy spots.
Things To See & Do
Mousehole is best enjoyed slowly. The village is a maze of narrow lanes lined with fishermen’s cottages, art galleries and small independent shops. Although dogs are not allowed in many of these, it is easy to take turns.
Walking around the harbour with your dog gives you views across Mount’s Bay, where on clear days you can see the iconic silhouette of St Michael’s Mount.
Just outside the village, the Mousehole Rock Pool is a tidal sea pool carved into the rocks. It fills naturally with seawater on the tide and is a beautiful place for a wild swim or simply to enjoy the coastal views.
The surrounding rocks and coastline also make for a nice short walk with your dog.
Mousehole sits along the South West Coast Path. From the village, you can walk west toward Lamorna Cove or head east along the cliffs toward Penzance.
Mousehole is also famous for its Christmas harbour lights, when the village is decorated with thousands of lights reflecting across the water.
Access and Facilities
Mousehole may be small, but it has everything you need for a visit.
Facilities in the village include:
- Cafes and pubs
- Independent shops and galleries
- Public toilets at both ends of the harbour
- Several small car parks near the village
There is a car park by the harbour, but the streets are narrow and get very busy in the summer. We visit a lot and have always managed to park at The Parade car park on the edge of the village, then walk a few minutes along the coast path into Mousehole. If you want a longer walk, there are some free roadside spots coming down the hill into the village, but you will have the hill walk back.
The streets themselves are narrow and can get busy during peak season, so timing your visit outside peak hours makes the experience much more relaxed.
