Best Time to Visit: This is an anytime beach although low tide for the widest sands
The beach at Porthkidney Sands is on the outskirts of St. Ives in Cornwall. Something about stepping onto Porthkidney Sands makes it one of my favourite beaches. The beach seems to stretch out endlessly, giving you and your dog that instant feeling of freedom, and the mix of sea, dunes and river estuary creates a space where you can settle into your own rhythm. Each time I’ve wandered this stretch, it’s felt like a world away from busy St Ives, just a couple of miles away.

Porthkidney Sands is the largest and sandiest of the dog-friendly beaches in St. Ives. Dogs are allowed year-round without any restrictions, making it an excellent choice for dog owners at any time of the year. Just be aware that the sheer size of the beach can tempt even calm dogs to sprint into the distance.
At the Hayle Estuary end, tides move quickly, and currents can be strong. It's wise to keep dogs away from deeper channels, especially at mid-tide when water levels change fast.
Porthkidney Sands offers a large area of fine sand that stretches from Hawk's Point up to the River Hayle. You can make this wander as short or as long as you like. The beach stretches about a mile, but with firm sand at low tide, you can easily double that distance by meandering along the water's edge. Dogs love the mix of wet, splashy sections and soft dune-side sand.
Head up into the dunes for a slightly more varied walk. The paths weave in and out of sandy hollows and grassy pockets, giving you lovely views back over the bay. Expect softer footing, and your dog can quickly go out of sight, so a good recall or a lead is essential.
The beach boasts beautiful views across St Ives Bay to Godrevy Lighthouse and the 3-mile-long Hayle Beach.
Despite its proximity to St Ives, Porthkidney Sands is often missed by visitors and tends to be less crowded, offering a more peaceful beach experience than busier town beaches.
The beach is accessible via a footpath from Lelant or by walking along the coastal path from Carbis Bay. The beach has several access points from the coast path, though the steps at Hawk's Point can be cut off as the tide comes in, leaving a long walk back along the path through the dunes.
A small car park at Lelant provides the nearest access to the beach, with a short walk from the parking area to the beach itself.
As with any beach visit, it's wise to bring water for both you and your dog, a bowl, and waste bags. There are no facilities directly on the beach, so plan accordingly. Lifeguards position themselves at the estuary end of the beach during the peak season and occasionally pop along the beach on a quad bike.

Porthkidney is my favourite dog beach in Cornwall and the best option on the St Ives side of the bay. The beach is never busy and no fears of just letting dogs run around off the lead. The only challenge to this is you have no facilities and you will need carry whatever you need for the trip. You mention the steps but in my view these are a problem when trying to handle dogs, bags and kids and I opt for the longer coast path around and through the dunes.
A good dog beach but it is empty for a reason. A bit too difficult to get to from St Ives
