About
Porthpean Beach is a lovely sheltered cove just south of St Austell on Cornwall’s south coast. With soft sand, calm waters and green headlands on either side, it feels quite different from the dramatic surf beaches along the north coast.
The beach sits at the end of a small valley and is popular with families, kayakers and paddleboarders thanks to the generally calm sea conditions. When the tide goes out, more sand appears, and the cove opens up into a wider space for walking and exploring.
For dog owners, Porthpean offers a peaceful seaside spot outside the busy summer season, while nearby coastal paths provide beautiful walks overlooking the bay.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome most of the year, with summer restrictions.
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from July 1 to August 31, 10 am to 6 pm; at all other times, they are welcome.
If you’re visiting in summer, early mornings and evenings are usually the best times for a relaxed walk along the beach.
Things To See & Do
At low tide, the sandy cove becomes a lovely place for a relaxed stroll with your dog. The calm setting and sheltered bay make it ideal for a slower-paced wander.
The waters are often calmer than the Atlantic-facing beaches in Cornwall, making it a pleasant place for dogs who enjoy a paddle.
The cliffs around the beach link to the spectacular South West Coast Path. From here, you can enjoy coastal walks towards nearby coves and headlands with views across St Austell Bay.
Access and Facilities
Porthpean has all the facilities you need during the warmer months, although you will need to be a bit more organised on a winter visit.
- A car park sits just above the beach, making access fairly straightforward.
- Public toilets are available nearby.
- A seasonal beach cafe and shop operate during warmer months.
The beach is reached via a short path from the car park, making it relatively easy compared with some of Cornwall’s steeper coves.
You’re only a short drive from the shops, restaurants and harbour at Charlestown.
