About
On the shores of Lake Windermere, the well-marked remains of Ambleside Roman Fort date from the 2nd century. It was built under Hadrian’s rule to guard the Roman road from Brougham to Ravenglass and to act as a supply base.
It was the base for a garrison of about 500 soldiers, and its setting on the northern shore of Lake Windermere made it strategically vital to the Roman occupation of Cumbria.
This is something worth a visit as part of a longer walk from Ambleside to Lake Windermere. You will have to use your imagination to understand the fort’s layout, as you have some stone wall remains and some ditches.
