About
Brougham Castle was built of red sandstone in the early 13th century by King John’s agent, Robert de Vieuxpont and extended over the years by the Clifford family. After falling into decay after 1617, Brougham was restored by Lady Anne Clifford. Inside, you will find an exhibition about her remarkable life.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs on leads are welcome, although they are not allowed on the private land by the river.
Things To See & Do
A complex of passages and spiral stairways makes Brougham a fascinating castle to explore. The top of the Keep has panoramic views over the Eden Valley and the earthworks of the adjacent Roman fort of Brocavum.
Access and Facilities
Facilities include toilets and a shop that also serves snacks and acts as an information point. There is no formal car park and so you will need to park carefully and considerately on the roadside.
