About
Humphrey Head might be your thing if you like peace and the sound of gulls instead of car horns. Tucked away near Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria, this long limestone headland sticks out into Morecambe Bay like it’s trying to escape the mainland. It’s not busy, not fancy, and it doesn’t try to impress you with ice cream stalls or shops.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are allowed, and there are no restrictions on times or seasons. However, they must be kept under control and on a lead.
Things To See & Do
The best bit about Humphrey Head is that it feels raw. Like the land, just sort of gave up and slid into the sea. A path goes along the top of the headland, and the views over Morecambe Bay are great. You can see right across the bay to Barrow if it’s clear.
It’s also famous for the story of the last wolf in England. Bones found in 1987 are being investigated, and it is thought that the wolf was killed here in the 14th century.
You can do a proper circular walk if you’re up for it. Start at the car park, walk across the causeway when the tide’s out, then up round the back of the cliffs. It’s a bit uneven in places, so wear good shoes, and don’t chance it if the sea’s coming in.
There are loads of rock pools at the water level. These are good fun for dogs who like climbing.
Access and Facilities
You’ll need to drive, as there are no direct buses or train stops. There is some parking at the end of Holy Well Lane, but it’s not a proper car park, more of a gravel patch.
There are no public toilets at the site and no cafe, with the closest shops in Allithwaite or Grange-over-Sands.
