Nethertown beach is part of a long stretch of remote dog-friendly beachfront, the beach is a mix of sand and shingle that all but disappears at high tide.

The beach is backed by the Cumbrian Coast Line, which runs between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness and has Nethertown Station right on the beach.
