About
Calke Abbey sits within a 600-acre estate of woodland, meadows, ponds and parkland. Your dog can roam (on lead when needed) and enjoy a wide range of walking terrain, from gentle lakeside strolls to woodland tracks and old estate drives.
Strolling among old trees, historic buildings, meadowlands and ponds gives the walk a peaceful, old-estate feel. If you enjoy quiet afternoons and gentle exploration rather than rugged hikes, Calke Abbey has that soothing, timeless vibe.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome in almost all outdoor areas: parkland, woodland, stable yards, gardens, lakesides, open countryside and estate paths. Dogs must be on a lead around livestock, near lakes/ponds, and in certain garden sections.
Dogs are allowed in the cafe/restaurant in the designated dog-friendly section or outside tables, the stable yards, shop and gardens, so you can grab food or a drink without leaving your dog outside alone.
Only assistance dogs are allowed inside the house, toilets and the church.
Things To See & Do
There are miles of woodland tracks, estate paths and parkland routes. The Woodland Walk stretches about 3 miles through woodland and meadows, offering a gentle ramble.
The estate has ponds, wetlands, and leafy borders that make for peaceful strolls, good for spotting birds and maybe a deer or two.
If you want something a bit more relaxed or sheltered, the gardens and stableyard area are accessible. Dogs on a lead are welcome, and it’s a nice mixture of heritage and green space without needing serious boots.
After walking, you can head to the dog-friendly section of the cafe/restaurant for a drink or meal. Water bowls are provided outside for dogs, and there are bins dotted around for waste.
