About
The Heights of Abraham is one of those places that feels a little magical the moment you start rising above the Derwent Valley in the cable car. If you’ve got a dog who’s steady on their paws and enjoys new experiences, you’re in for something special.
Dogs are welcome on the cable cars, which is rare and brilliant. Most dogs take the 7-minute cable car ride in their stride, especially with you close by. The cars are enclosed, so even nervous pups usually settle.
Once you’re at the top, there’s a 60-acre estate to wander. The estate has a good mix of paths, some gentle loops and a few more uneven bits. Every corner reveals another vantage point with sweeping views over Matlock Bath and the valley. A self-guided audio tour is available for your mobile phone, taking you around the estate and its viewpoints.
Your ticket includes access to all attractions, and so you may choose for one person to stay with the dog whilst the other enters a dog-restricted part. For example, a cavern tour lasts approximately 30 minutes.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on the cable cars and around the estate as long as they are kept on a lead. Unfortunately, for safety reasons, dogs cannot enter the underground caverns, and the indoor attractions are also off-limits.
Dogs are welcome inside the cafe and outside at the Vista restaurant. Dogs are not allowed inside the Vista restaurant or on the Vista balcony.
You have plenty of picnic spots dotted around the estate.
Access and Facilities
There’s no on-site parking. Use one of the pay-and-display car parks in Matlock Bath (the station car park is closest). In busy times or holidays, arrive early to secure a space.
The nearest station is Matlock Bath railway station, just a short walk from the cable-car base. Regular trains run from Derby, Nottingham and nearby towns. Buses also serve Matlock Bath frequently.
The Heights of Abraham website recommends four hours or more for a visit, with the typical time spent on the summit being 3-5 hours.
