About
Criccieth is a beautiful seaside resort town on Cardigan Bay, on the southern side of the Llyn Peninsula, with two beaches on either side of the rocky castle headland.
The main Criccieth beach, East Beach, is east of the castle, a south-facing beach with sand and pebbles. This is more of a family beach with safer swimming conditions. Dogs are allowed all year round beyond the car park, although restrictions exist on most of the beach between April 1st and September 30th.
The second beach is Marine or West Beach, a long sandy beach that sits to the west of the castle and stretches out of town. You don’t have a promenade but you do have a good coastal path taking you away from the town. Dog restrictions are in place in the bathing area at the castle end, but dogs are allowed all year round from the car park away from town.
Facilities are available in the town and this is not a town for arcades and amusements and is more a peaceful beach town or base for walking in the area. Facilities include parking, toilets, grass areas and places to eat and shop. The East Beach has a promenade and is slightly closer to the amenities.
Criccieth Castle was originally built by Llywelyn the Great in the early 13th century and is worth a visit as you have excellent views of both the beaches, Cardigan Bay and inland towards Snowdonia. Dogs must always be kept on leads in the castle, and non-assistance dogs must remain on the ground floor only.
