About
Heartwood Forest is situated near Sandridge, in Hertfordshire, close to St Albans. It’s big, 858 acres, you could walk for hours, and it’s quiet in that good way. The forest is managed by the Woodland Trust, with no big visitor centre or ice cream vans beeping at you. Just space, trees, and fields. If your dog loves running, this place is a great option.
Dog Access and Rules
With its extensive pathways and open space, Heartwood is the perfect place to walk your dog. Dogs are allowed everywhere, but please keep your dog on a lead in designated areas of the site and around long grass, particularly during nesting season (1 March – 31 July).
Things To See & Do
There’s something odd but good about walking here. You get patches where trees are packed in tight, and it goes all shady and cool. Then you turn a corner, and you have an open field.
If you want a bit more structure to your visit, there are three way-marked trails.
Wildlife Wander – 2.5 mile/4km walk that takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, including ancient woodland and wildflower meadows.
Magical Meander – 1.5 miles/2.4km walk that takes approximately 1 hour, including the Magical Wood.
Heartwood Hike – 2.7 miles/4.3km walk that takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, including Langley Wood, which is known for its bluebell displays in spring.

Access and Facilities
The easiest access is via the car park on the B651 at Sandridge (postcode AL4 9DQ). It gets rammed on weekends, and if it’s full, you can park in Sandridge, which adds a little to your walk.
No toilets. Just trees. Be prepared and come with dog bags, water and snacks. No cafe inside the woods, but Sandridge village is nearby.
By the car park, you’ll find information boards and a site map.
