The Elephant & Castle, tucked at the end of Amwell Lane near Wheathampstead, is an excellent example of a traditional countryside pub. If you’re walking around Nomansland Common or heading back from Heartwood Forest, this pub is an easy food stop. Dogs can drop straight from the trail into the garden and get a bowl of water.
The pub is a free house, with real ales brewed just down the road, plus a decent wine, gin and craft lager list. The food is made using local produce from independent suppliers. Think burgers, steaks, fish, vegetarian/vegan options, plus seasonal specials and roasts on Sundays.
