About
Fionnphort Beach is located on the western tip of the Isle of Mull, just a stone’s throw from the ferry to the historic island of Iona. This makes it a popular spot for travellers waiting for or returning from visiting Iona.
Dog-Friendly Policies
Fionnphort Beach welcomes dogs year-round, allowing them to enjoy the beach without any seasonal restrictions. It’s a wide-open space, perfect for your dog to stretch their legs and run freely.
Things To See & Do
The village of Fionnphort has been the main departure point for those travelling to Iona, a site of great spiritual significance due to the ancient Iona Abbey. The beach at Fionnphort has long been a landing spot for fishing boats, and the community thrives on its connections to the sea.
The expansive beach at low tide provides plenty of space for your dog to run, play fetch, or simply enjoy the feel of the sand between their paws. If your dog enjoys adventure, the rocky outcrops and tidal pools along the beach edge offer exciting spots to explore.
A massive granite boulder in the centre of the beach, the “split rock”, also known as “The Coffee Bean”, is a feature of the Bay you can’t miss.
Beyond the beach, you can venture onto nearby dog-friendly trails. The path to Iona, just a short ferry ride away, is particularly popular.
Access and Facilities
Fionnphort Beach is easily accessible by car, as it lies at the end of the main road from Craignure, where the ferry from the mainland docks. The drive takes around an hour and offers breathtaking views of Mull’s rugged landscape.
Whilst Fionnphort is a small village, there is car parking and a couple of dog-friendly cafes where you can grab a coffee or snack. The local shop offers essentials if you need supplies.
Public toilets are available near the ferry terminal to Iona.
