If you’re looking for a classic seaside escape with your dog, Herne Bay is a lovely place to put on your list.
Set on the north Kent coast between Whitstable and Reculver, Herne Bay combines a long seafront, colourful beach huts, a traditional pier, coastal walks and plenty of places to stop for a coffee, ice cream or something to eat.
For dog owners, there’s an important seasonal rule to keep in mind. Dogs aren’t allowed on the central beach between Herne Bay Pier and Lane End from 1 May to 30 September.
The good news is that you don’t have to wait until October to enjoy Herne Bay with your dog. There are other stretches of coastline nearby where dogs are welcome, including the coast towards Reculver.

On Herne Bay Beach, there’s an important seasonal rule to keep in mind. Dogs aren’t allowed on the central beach between Herne Bay Pier and Lane End from 1 May to 30 September.
The good news is that you don’t have to wait until October to enjoy Herne Bay with your dog. There is plenty of beach available even in the summer and other stretches of coastline nearby where dogs are welcome, including the coast towards Reculver.
Things To See & Do
Autumn and winter are when Herne Bay really comes into its own for dog owners.
From October onwards, the central seasonal beach restriction is lifted. The crowds thin out, and a brisk walk along the seafront followed by a warm drink in a dog-friendly pub can be rather lovely.
Summer needs a little more planning. The central beach is subject to the seasonal restriction from 1 May until 30 September, so don’t arrive expecting to let your dog run along the main beach.
Instead, consider:
- Walking the promenade on lead to the dog-friendly beach stretches
- Exploring the coast towards Reculver
- Combining Herne Bay with Whitstable
Herne Bay to Reculver Walk
If your dog enjoys a proper walk, one of the best options is to head east from Herne Bay towards Reculver.
The coastline becomes increasingly open and natural as you leave the town behind.
Eventually you’ll reach the distinctive towers of the ruined medieval church at Reculver, which make a wonderful landmark and photo opportunity.
Reculver Beach is another useful place to explore with your dog.
Herne Bay to Whitstable Walk
Going in the opposite direction, you can follow the coast towards Whitstable.
This is a leisurely route with sea views, beachfront scenery, historic landmarks and places to stop along the way.
This is a lovely option if you want to turn your visit into a full-day adventure.
Access and Facilities
There are several parking options around the town and seafront. I’d recommend arriving early on sunny weekends and during school holidays, particularly if you’re planning to spend the whole day here.
Once you’ve parked, much of the central area is easy to explore on foot.
