About
Visiting Tankerton Beach with your dog is a great choice for those looking to enjoy a classic English seaside experience with their furry companion. Located near Whitstable in Kent, Tankerton Beach is known for its long, pebbly stretch and the distinctive grassy slope known as Tankerton Slopes, which offers panoramic views of the Thames Estuary. The beach and its surroundings are perfect for leisurely walks, picnics, and relaxed days by the sea.
Dog Access and Rules
Tankerton Beach allows dogs throughout the year but with some seasonal restrictions. From the 1st of May to the 30th of September, dogs are not allowed on the central part of the beach level with Pier Avenue West to The Street, and dogs must be kept on a lead on the promenade. However, the slopes and beach beyond these areas are available to dogs all year round, offering plenty of space for walking.
Things To See & Do
Tankerton Beach is primarily a pebble beach, which is bordered by a wide expanse of green grass known as Tankerton Slopes. The slopes are a popular spot for walking and picnicking, offering stunning views over the sea and ample space for dogs to enjoy.
A unique feature of Tankerton is “The Street,” a natural shingle spit that extends out into the sea and is visible at low tide. Walking down The Street can be a novel experience, allowing you and your dog to venture quite far out to sea, with water on either side. Although, care should be taken when the tide comes in.
Tankerton is just a short walk from Whitstable, known for its oysters, charming harbour, and a variety of dog-friendly cafes and shops. Extending your visit to include Whitstable can make for a lovely day out.
Access and Facilities
Tankerton Beach is well-served by public parking, with spaces available along Marine Parade and other nearby streets. From there, access to the beach and slopes is straightforward.
The beach’s facilities include toilets with disabled access, a cafe/restaurant, a promenade, grass areas, and beach hut hire.
