About
Formby Beach is located in Merseyside, just north of Liverpool. This stretch of coastline is managed by the National Trust and is known for its natural beauty and conservation efforts. Formby’s rich history includes prehistoric footprints preserved in the mudflats and an ongoing effort to protect the beach’s natural landscape. The beach has long been a favourite for locals and visitors, offering a unique combination of stunning coastal views and wildlife habitats.
Dog Access and Rules
Well-behaved dogs are welcome to wander with you throughout the site. Dogs must be on a lead along the Squirrel Walk and kept under close control throughout the rest of the site.
If you’re unsure, it’s always best to keep them on a lead.
Things To See & Do
Formby Beach is a large area stretching over 1000 acres with dunes and pine woods. There’s plenty to do with your dog at Formby Beach. The wide expanse of sand is perfect for a game of fetch, while the dunes provide exciting terrain for dogs to explore. The beach stretches for miles, giving you and your dog ample room for a peaceful walk by the sea. If you and your pup enjoy longer walks, you can venture into the Formby Pinewoods, where shaded paths offer a change of scenery. Remember to keep your dog on a lead in areas where wildlife, like red squirrels, thrive.
Access and Facilities
Getting to Formby Beach by car is about a 40-minute drive from central Liverpool, and the beach is well-signposted from the A565. Several National Trust car parks near the beach, although they can get busy during peak times. If you’re travelling by train, the nearest station is Formby, which is about a 20-minute walk from the beach. Public transport links are good, with buses and trains connecting the area to Liverpool and surrounding towns.
Lifeboat Road site is 1½ miles from the town centre; three linked unpaved car parks with several routes cascading into the dunes and woods. The car parks are about 900 yards from the beach.
Victoria Road site is north of Lifeboat Road and is busier due to the red squirrel reserve. Parking is available adjacent to the reserve, and at the end of the road, there is a large unpaved car park for easier beach access. The beach from the car park is about 100 yards.
Public toilets are available at Victoria Road during car park opening hours, but there are no toilet facilities at Lifeboat Road.
