About
If you are visiting Whitby, you have a few options for visiting a beach with your dog, though some seasonal restrictions apply. Here, we will let you know about some options available for all-year-round beach visits with your dog.
As you head out of Whitby to the West, although this looks like one long beach, it is split. The closest part to Whitby is the main Whitby Sands Beach, also known as West Cliff Beach. This is a sandy beach with some rocks.
As you head further from the town, the beaches are less busy. The end stretch by the headland is the dog-friendly Sandsend Beach, but between West and Sandsend Beaches is Upgang Beach, which is also dog-friendly year-round and very popular with dog walkers.
But within the town, there is a great little dog-friendly beach. The River Esk splits through Whitby, and a swing bridge connects the West and East sides of the town. On the east, you have a small sandy beach below the Abbey, protected by the outer harbour walls, known as Tate Hill Beach. Tate Hill Beach allows dogs year-round and is a great beach for watching the harbour boats and paddling in the shallow waters.
If you want a nice walk around a mile from the Abbey, you can head east along the coast path to a beach at Saltwick Bay. This beach is by a holiday park and is dog-friendly all year, though it involves a steep scramble to get there.
