Dog Access and Rules
Dunwich is a great all-year-round dog-friendly beach, and dogs are welcome at Dunwich Heath, but a few restrictions apply during visits:
- From 1 March to 31 August, all dogs must be kept on a lead and must remain on the designated footpaths when on the Heath. These rules are to protect the ground-nesting birds during their breeding season.
- Dogs can be let off their lead on the beach itself, but owners must always prevent their dogs from chasing birds or approaching seals. Outside the Heath area, under these conditions, dogs may roam under control.
There’s usually ample space for walking, sniffing, and paddling, especially outside peak summer days. Always keep your dog under control near others, access paths, and wildlife areas.

Access and Facilities
Dunwich is a fairly easy beach to visit, especially compared with some of the more remote stretches along this part of the coast.
You have two choices to park in Dunwich village (IP17 3EN) or at the National Trust Heath and Beach car park (IP17 3DJ). In both cases, parking is convenient, with spaces close to the beach. Where you park is based on your preference, the first is beach and village, whilst the second is beach and health.
Basic amenities are available nearby, including a summer ice-cream kiosk and a tearoom serving drinks and light meals. Still, prepare with water, towels, and anything your dog might need, especially on hot days.
Shingle can be tougher on feet and paws than soft sand, though lower tides make the walk easier. There’s little shade along the shore, so plan visits around the weather if your dog is heat-sensitive.
