About
You start just outside the bustle of Southwold, stepping straight into the calm of the marshes. It feels open and peaceful, with winding paths and the soft sounds of water and wildlife around you.
Then, almost without noticing, you arrive in Walberswick, a small, characterful village that’s perfect for a pause.
The return along the beach offers the chance for an off-lead run, as you get that feeling of space that makes the whole walk come together.
It’s simple, but it flows beautifully.
Dog Access and Rules
This is a really enjoyable route for dogs, but it does need a bit of awareness.
- The marshes and reedbeds are rich in wildlife, so leads are recommended.
- The Walberswick village section is relaxed but can be busier.
On the beach:
- Dogs are welcome year-round on Walberswick and The Denes beaches.
- Closer to Southwold, you’ll encounter seasonal restrictions and need to hop off the beach onto the promenade (on lead).
Things To See & Do
You have many walk options, but the one we like most is a circular walk of roughly 10km: see AllTrails for roughly what we did.
Southwold to the Town Marshes
Start in Southwold and head towards the River Blyth, picking up the paths that lead into the marshes.
This first stretch is calm and spacious. Flat paths along open grassland and reeds, with water channels crossing the landscape.
It’s a lovely place to settle into the walk — slow, quiet, and easy.
Marsh walk to Walberswick
Follow the path as it curves gently towards Walberswick.
There’s something about this section that feels slightly removed from everything.
You will cross the River Blythe on a footbridge and then track the river. As you reach Walberswick, you get cottages, a beach, and a relaxed village feel.
Walberswick stop
This is the perfect halfway pause.
Take your time here:
- Wander through the village.
- Stop for a drink or bite if you fancy it.
- Let your dog rest before the return.
It’s an easy place to linger for a while.
Return via the beach
From Walberswick, head out towards the beach and begin your return along the shoreline.
You can cross the river either by the seasonal foot ferry, which allows dogs, or by going back and crossing on the footbridge.
This part feels completely different as the marshes fall away behind you, replaced by a dune-backed beach and sea. Depending on the tide, you can walk along the sand or take the slightly higher shingle line.
It’s simple, refreshing, and a really satisfying way to finish the walk.
Back into Southwold
As you approach Southwold on Denes Beach, the familiar shapes of the town come back into view. Just a note that as you reach the beach huts, you will hit the Southwold Beach stretch, which has seasonal restrictions, so you may need to move to the promenade.
You can loop back towards the promenade or head into town for a final stop.
