About
Southwold Beach is on a section of the Suffolk coast declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This sandy beach, with well-maintained wooden groynes and beach huts, is a family’s choice. Walk along the beach away from the huts, and you will see sand dunes at The Denes beach.
You’ve got the iconic beach huts, the pier stretching out into the sea, it’s classic British seaside, but with a slightly gentler, more relaxed feel.
It’s this mix that makes Southwold work so well.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are not allowed on the main Southwold beach (around the pier and promenade) from 1st April to 30th September.
This restricted zone runs along the busiest stretch of beach huts and promenade
During the restricted months, you still have a beach as you can walk to the dog-friendly Dunes Beach.
What this means in practice is that in the summer, head slightly south, whilst in Autumn/Winter, you have full freedom across the beach.
Promenade areas require dogs to be on a lead, and there are clear signs marking the rules and zones.
Things To See & Do
At low tide, you’ll get long stretches of sand which are perfect for a proper wander with your dog. Pair your walk with a stop at Southwold Pier, it’s a lovely place to pause and take in the view.
To get more space or avoid the crowds, head to Denes Beach, where you’ll find dunes, grass, and fewer people. A great spot if your dog prefers space.
Heading south, you’ll head towards the harbour and Walberswick with some good longer walks.
All along the seafront, you have lots of benches, probably the most I have ever seen on a promenade. Grab a bench, let your dog rest, and just watch the sea for a while.
Access and Facilities
Southwold has all the facilities expected of a traditional seaside town, and the actual beach includes toilets, a pier, a wide flat promenade, beach huts, and lifeguards by the pier in the summer months.
Parking is available in a seafront car park by the pier, or free parking on the streets if you arrive early.
