About
If the main Southwold Beach feels a bit busy, this is where you come.
The Denes stretches from the edge of town down towards the River Blyth, and straight away it feels different. Wilder. More open. A little less polished, all in a good way.
You’ve got a blend of sand and shingle underfoot, backed by soft dunes and patches of grass. It’s the kind of place where you can walk and play with the town in the background.
And that’s the true magic here. It’s quieter, more spacious, and relaxed, which is why it’s a favourite with dog walkers, especially when the main beach has a seasonal ban in place.
Dog Access and Rules
This is one of the best bits about The Denes.
Dogs are welcome all year round, with no seasonal bans on this stretch. You can often let dogs off lead, especially towards the quieter southern end near the river.
Just keep in mind the adjacent main Southwold Beach does have summer restrictions — so make sure you’re in the right section, and the promenade requires dogs to be on leads.
If you’re visiting Southwold in the summer with your dog, this is the place to head.
Things To See & Do
The Denes offers lots of beach, plenty of space, and no need to dodge crowds. Especially towards the harbour end, there’s a real sense of freedom here. Perfect for dogs who love a proper run.
At the southern point, you’ll reach the River Blyth, with boats, a lifeboat station, a few places to eat and even a foot ferry across to Walberswick.
Access and Facilities
The Denes keep things nicely balanced, natural, but still convenient.
You can park at the Ferry Road car park or at the harbour. To be honest, this is just an extension of Southwold, so any parking in town is just a short walk away.
Facilities include toilets at Southwold Harbour and Ferry Road, kiosks at the harbour for drinks/snacks, with takeaway options, or dog-friendly outdoor seating. There are more dog-friendly cafes and pubs in Southwold, all a short walk away.
